Anatoly OSTRYAGIN

Head of the municipal entity

The Purovsky District was established in the year 1932. It covers the area of 108.4 thousand square kilometres. The population (including those who work in watches) amounts to 64 thousand, 47 thousand of them being permanent residents, including 3.8 thousand representatives of indigenous nationalities of the North. There are altogether 12 inhabited localities. The administrative centre is located in the settlement of urban type Tarko-Sale (18.9 thousand residents). 43 percent of Russian gas and nine percent of Russian oil are produced on the territory of the district.

The Purovsky District is situated in the central part of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Area, in the basin of the Pur river.

This is a unique district. Huge stockpiles of oil and gas are concentrated in its entrails. Since the sixties of the XX century it has been one of the most intensely developing districts of Russia. Almost all renowned oil and gas producing Russian companies take part in drilling operations (92 licenses were issued to 29 enterprises, entitling them to the industrial development of hydrocarbon resources located on its territory). Besides oil and gas, the deposits of nonmetallics such as diatomites, clays, sand and gravel have been discovered.

Powerful industrial development does not prevent two big agricultural cooperatives from successful engagement in traditional agricultural businesses such as deer-raising, fur-bearing animal breeding and fishery. A fish-processing plant, producing highest quality fish products, as well as four indigenous communities, uniting the native peoples of the North on the basis of territorial self-government and joint economic activity successfully run their business.

The administration of the district ensures consistent all-round socio-economic development of the district populated areas, their social sphere, balancing the interests of intensive industrial development of the territory with conservation of unique nature, the local flora and fauna as a natural environment for scanty nationalities of the North and their age-old culture.

In view of the fact that the explored and developed oil and gas fields are very important for the Russian economy, the district entered the XXI century, offering challenging opportunities for the guaranteed, efficient investments into its economic, social and cultural development.
