On June 27, 1929 the first paper-making machine with the rated capacity of 29.5 thousand tons of paper a year produced by the German company УFuelnerФ was started. After this machine had been put into service, rapid economic development commenced in Karelia. For the last 70 odd years the plant has become a real leader in the republican economy. The articles manufactured at УKondopogaФ are well known in many countries of the world: USA, Germany, Finland, Sweden, India, Turkey.
After reconstruction, or rather, complete replacement of the old machine by a new one made at the local Petrozavodsk works in 1984, the newsprint yield multiplied, and the Kondopoga pulp and paper mill became the biggest manufacturer of newsprint in Russia. Every third Russian newspaper is printed on the paper made at УKondopogaФ.
At the present time JSC УKondopogaФ owns six paper-making machines, wood, pulp, cellulose timber-treatment, repair and engineering, repair and building and other shops, a heat power plant, a motor-transport enterprise, a brickyard, an auxiliary farm Ч altogether more than 25 structural divisions. In recent years all paper-making machines and the equipment of other shops have been radically modernized, all services have been computerized. Those measures coupled with a skilful manpower policy and care for the employees facilitate the improvement of the product quality. Only export deliveries of the newsprint have increased five times for the last 10 years.
Being a town-forming plant, JSC УKondopogaФ assists the local authorities in implementing numerous social programmes: it supports over one half of the housing fund, supplies the town with heat and hot water. In recent years the company has built a creative and health centres, a childrenТs library and a music school, a chess and athletic clubs, a stadium and sport grounds, two hotels and cafeterias. The management take great pains to bring about technological re-equipment of production facilities. A complex of the tenth extraordinarily fast and productive paper-making machine and a thermomechanical pulp mill are being built. A ceramic brickyard is working at full capacity, supplying the whole Russian Northwest and even Finland wherefrom counter deliveries of materials, parts are coming along withЕ fodder for the trout that is raised at an auxiliary farm.
